Twenty One

Petra came in the morning to help Mylah get ready. She seemed distracted and didn’t notice the bruises on Mylah’s neck until she was brushing her hair. When she saw them, she gasped and stroked them lightly.

“Where did these come from?” she demanded.

“I may have gotten into a little scrape last night…” Mylah’s cheeks reddened, embarrassed that she had let her guard down even after all the warnings.

“A little scrape,” Petra scoffed. “You look like someone trampled you with their horse!” She gestured to the cut on Mylah’s leg revealed by the slit in her gown.

“I’d say I did pretty well, considering,” Mylah joked.

“How can you joke about this? You could have been killed! We must tell King Castien. He will want to know someone tried to harm his guest,” Petra sighed, as if that was the exact opposite of what she wanted to do.

“No, it’s fine. Really. Let’s cover it up, and it will be gone in a few days. No one has to know.” Mylah would rather no one know of her fight with Davina. She had a feeling Davina would not look too kindly on her if she tattled to the king.

“But if it happens again,” Petra tried to argue but Mylah shook her head.

“No. It won’t happen again,” she said, hoping that she was right, but if it did, she would be ready.

“Hmph.” Petra dug into the armoire and pulled back with a scarf in her hand. “This will do the trick.” She wound the scarf around Mylah’s neck and tied it into a fashionable bow to make it look purposeful.

“Thank you,” Mylah grasped Petra’s hand.

“Come, the king requests your presence at breakfast this morning.” Petra pulled her hand from Mylah’s grasp and beckoned for Mylah to follow her.

“Did you see the king this morning, did he seem upset?” She worried that he was about to tell her off again.

“He always seems upset, girl. Never anticipate anything good when he requests your presence.” Petra gave her a pitying look and left the room. Mylah followed her and tried to prepare herself for whatever was coming.

They arrived at the dining room and Mylah realized there was a third person at the table; Torin. She immediately grew hot and was grateful she had the scarf to cover the blush creeping up her neck, though her cheeks had to be red as well.

“How good of you to join us this morning,” King Castien drawled. “Take a seat.” Mylah took the only unoccupied seat.

“What’s that?” Elias spoke with concern in his voice, causing Mylah to look his way. She realized his gaze was fixed on her exposed leg and she groaned inwardly. Petra should have had her change into a different dress.

“I slipped and scraped it on something.” Mylah pulled her dress together to cover the mark.

“It wasn’t there yesterday,” Elias pointed out, and Mylah shot him a frustrated look.

“No, it wasn’t, because I fell after I left the revel last night, on my way back to my room.” Mylah wished he would drop it, but instead, King Castien joined in.
